Want a BlackBerry PlayBook? This might be a good time to buy one, especially if you were looking at the models with more storage memory. RIM has slashed the price of all PlayBook models to $299 in a limited-time offer that ends Feb. 4.
The deal isn’t great if you are interested in the cheapest PlayBook with 16 GB of memory. Its price has previously been cut even lower, to $199.
However, if you want a higher-end PlayBook, the savings are decent. Normally, the 32 GB variant costs $599, and the 64 GB variant is $699.
The sale will end either Feb. 4 or when supplies dry out; right now, all three models are available for purchase
RIM has been losing money on the PlayBook, and sales have been dwindling. In its first quarter of availability, RIM said it shipped 500,000 PlayBook devices; in the second quarter, that number fell to 250,000, and in the third quarter it went down to 150,000.
HP’s post-mortem success with the TouchPad has shown that there is a market for non-iPad tablets if the price is right. RIM has frequently slashed the price of its tablet as part of various deals and promotions; we’ll see if this latest deal puts the PlayBook sales on the right track.
